2020 Champions League semifinals preview: Lyon vs Bayern

We have arrived at the second match in the Champions League semifinals. This match resembles a David vs Goliath battle.

Lyon’s appearance in the UCL semifinal is surprising, considering they not only finished seventh in Ligue 1, below European qualification but also they faced elite clubs in Juventus and Manchester City in the previous rounds. In the round of 16, they held off a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo in leg two and advanced 2-2 on the away-goal tiebreaker. Against Man City, they scored the first two goals after great counter-attacks and benefitted from a wide-open miss by Raheem Sterling. Lyon won 3-1 with a brace from Moussa Dembele.

They emphasize a strong midfield and defense with an opportunistic attack. They held Juventus to two goals in two matches and Man City to one goal in their quarterfinals match. They need to play even better if they stand a chance against the Goliath they face next.

Bayern Munich has looked as dominant as ever. They channeled their inner-2014 German National Team as they dominated Barcelona in the quarterfinals 8-2 with a braces from Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho. Leftback Alphonso Davies continued to show why he is the best leftback in the world as he used incredible moves and athleticism to set up Bayern’s fifth goal.

Since play resumed for Bayern in May, they have won every match and have looked relentless both in the attack and the defense. They are a machine and are looking as strong as any club in the world.

PSG is the first club in the UCL Final after their 3-0 win over RB Leipzig yesterday. They have never won a UCL championship as is the case for Lyon. Bayern, on the other hand, has won the competition five times. They most recently won in 2013 over Bundesliga rival Borussia Dortmund, who had current Bayern-striker Robert Lewandowski on their club. Since Lewandowski joined Bayern right after the 2013-14 season, Bayern has not reached the final.

Lewandowski has the chance to reach his first UCL Final since his time at Dortmund and he will in style. Bayern outmatches Lyon in every way and the match will not be close.

Prediction: Bayern 5 Lyon 0
